Recovery Plus is a wellness initiative implemented by publicly funded substance abuse and mental health treatment centers that includes a comprehensive tobacco-free campus policy and integrates tobacco cessation into treatment protocols.
Two Cardinal Rules of Recovery Plus:
|1.||No one will be denied treatment.|
|2.||Assessment, treatment planning, and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) will be provided to all clients.|
Why Recovery Plus?
- Clients receiving treatment for alcohol and other drug abuse problems are disparately affected by tobacco use. These clients use tobacco at much higher rates than the general population.
- People with serious mental illness die 25 years younger than the general population due largely to conditions caused or worsened by smoking.
- In addition to interfering with many psychiatric medications, tobacco products kill more people than all other drugs combined.
- Treating tobacco use is a key part of a holistic, individualized treatment planning.
